Kapadokya

We cycle through the Highlands of Turkey, passing the hudge Saltlake "Tuz Gölü". One of the lakes in the world with the highest salt concentration. The hills are easy to handle, as we are already on more than 1000 meter altitude. But the rain and the cold make us stop from time to time: put on more clothes, pack things waterproof or heat us up at a petrol station. And then we reach the amazing region of Cappadocia. Cappadocia was once a very active volcanic region. As hudge ammounts of lava reached slowely the surface, the characteritic landscape of Cappadocia was formed.
We enjoy the roads, which lead us through playful landscapes with impressive snowy volcanoes in the background. After visiting an underground City, we explore the caves and rooms of the rock-cut temples.
On the way we pass many fields of pumpkins. But we are quite surprised about their harvesting style. They take it from the soil and throw it into a straw cutter. Most of it is therefore spit back to the field. It seems to us that they are only interested into the seeds of the vegetable.
We have a heavy front wind not experienced before when cycling to the Taurus Mountains. Therefoe we stay close together, one behind the other and often change the position so that the one behind can rest in the wind shadow. The time is running but we still want to do the next pass today. But half way up, we are not only loosing always more and more power but are also short in water. As we are not willing to go back, we try to stop some cars in order to get some water or a transportation to the next village. And in a short while we are sitting in a pick-up. But the driver Esat just lets us drink a tea in the next village. He wants to show us his little city, invites us to a Kebab and lots of beer. Late at night he wants to bring us to a disco. But we are that tired and don't join him. And also to mention, on the following day there are two passes on our programm, before the road goes down to the sea 1500 meters.
